Overview
General surgery covers many conditions of the skin and soft tissue, the abdomen and the anal region. Examples include lumps such as lipoma and sebaceous cyst, ganglion cyst and anal fistula.
At the consultation, the surgeon examines the problem, arranges any tests needed and explains whether an operation is required.

Common symptoms
- A lump or swelling under the skin
- A lump that is growing, painful or discharging
- Pain, discharge or a small opening near the anus
When to see a doctor
- A lump that grows quickly, feels hard or does not move
- Fever, spreading redness or pus
If you have severe pain, vomiting, fever or heavy bleeding, go to the nearest emergency department.
